I think that the Grateful Dead were f***ing horrible and most people, except for a bunch of snooty hippies, would agree with me that the Grateful Dead's music was just watered down f***ing country music and f***ing Black Flag were a much more credible band". "There's our good friend Bill Stevenson who played drums in Black Flag and also the Descendants and All and I think that changing the name from the Deadhead sticker on the Cadillac to the Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac was a great honour to take the f***ing Grateful Dead name out of that song. "We actually did about ten different versions with different band names" Kris says. It was covered by Last Call a cappella, Morgan Burke, The BB Band, The MadHatters and other artists. Don's line 'I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac' has become 'I saw a BLACK FLAG sticker on a Cadillac'. The song Build Me Up Buttercup was written by Mike dAbo and Tony Macaulay and was first released by The Foundations in 1968. The Ataris made one small change to the lyrics. Here I’m going to give you three additional tips on how negative space can enhance your art. Tips for using negative space effectively The dress that is normally a positive space becomes part of the negative one. I play with the negative space in this oil painting as well. Presence,16×20, oil on panel with some leafing, unframed, available. In this oil painting I use negative space to fill in the forms. Invisible: frosted past, oil on panel with some aluminum leaf, 11×14. The fabric becomes the negative space with its folds moving around the starfish to create visual interest. The beads and marbles lead the eye to the subject of interest (positive space). This is one of my still life drawings where I play with negative and positive space. The portrait itself is the positive space and this empty background is the negative space. Raphael, Self-portrait, Pitti Palace, Italy | In this painting we can see the most common use of negative and positive space in art. If the background were the same pink hue and sharpness, the flower would be lost visually. Pink rose, 9×12 inches, lightfast colored pencils on board | For example, in this picture pink rose stands out being the center of interest or a focal point set against the purplish background (the negative space). The background (negative space) has subdued colors and details. Painted in sharp focus, she occupies the most space in the picture. He places his focal point-the woman at a diagonal, creating movement. Prado museum | In this beautiful painting we can see how the artist creates a dynamic composition using both negative and positive space effectively. Notice that the chair on the right is rotated towards the figure and a large map behind the woman sets contrast and mystery in art. The surrounding objects – the chairs, table and map create visual balance in the painting. 1663 oil on canvas, h 46.5cm × w 39cm × d 6.5cm | In this painting the woman in blue is the subject and the focal point of the painting. Woman Reading a Letter, Johannes Vermeer, c. Add the background elements around this focal point to lead the eye to it. This focal point must be big enough, taking the majority of your space. To use both negative and positive space in drawing effectively, consider picking your main focal point or a center of interest in art first. In my mind I compose the image before I begin drawing. I consider everything: composition, values, textures, and colors not only of the subject, but also of the negative space itself. One of the most common mistakes beginners make, they forget to include their background space into the equation, and ask me what to do with it much later when they are almost done shading the object itself. Hence, the negative space can bring visual balance and unity to your composition with a specific tone, shape or shadow. These edges are affected by tones and colors placed right next to or around it. Every subject in your painting and drawing has edges. The negative space can be an effective tool to define your center of interest in art. It can have out of focus objects, colors and details that support the focal point – your main subject in the drawing. The negative space in art isn’t always empty or in one color. The flower itself is the positive space, and the white background around it is the negative space. This is my colored pencil drawing of a flower. Here is an example of a positive space in art. Usually the positive space is the object(s) you draw, and the negative space is the background that surrounds it. If it’s the profiles, you’re seeing the negative space. What do you see a black vase or two white profiles? If it’s the black vase, you’re looking at the positive space. Negative space is the empty space or background space that surrounds that object or subject. Positive space in art is the subject or object itself in art, such as a cat, cup, spoon, etc. Every realist artist combines negative space into his drawing and painting to create visual balance and unity. To design beautiful compositions in painting and drawing, you need to understand the difference between negative and positive space in art. In addition to automatic switching it’s still possible to choose a fixed dark or light appearance. The desired theme appearance can be chosen in LaunchBar Settings > Appearance.Ědded automatic switching between a theme’s dark and light appearance based on the current system appearance.Release notes: "- Automatic Theme Switching: I downloaded Nova and gained the functionality I was looking for among a host of other options not offered by Sense 5.V6.18 is out. It was suggested to me by another member to try Nova Launcher or some other 3rd party app to accomplish this. Bottom line.if you want BlinkFeed as your default home screen then you can do this quit easily, however you cannot do the same thing from the app drawer. Note - You can accomplish this very easily when you have BlinkFeed set as your home screen.just create the folder(s) in the launch bar from your app drawer (because you cannot edit the launch bar from the "customize home screen" page) then go to BlinkFeed and you can add the icons back to your app drawer from the "customize home screen" page. That is the easy part.what I was trying to do was create a folder in the launch bar and also have the same icons in my app drawer but I guess Sense 5 will not let you do that because when you drag an icon from the app drawer down to the launch bar to create the folder there is no way to create a duplicate icon to put back in your app drawer. If you want to keep all the apps that came pre-loaded in the launch bar but also want to add more just long-press any icon, drag it down to the launch bar, hover it over any app in the task bar and a folder will be created. To do that simply long-press and drag any icon in the launch bar up and replace it with any icon you want by long-pressing it and dragging it down to the empty spot in the task bar. Your input is appreciated.thank you.Ĭhanging the apps in the task bar is not the problem I was having. I would be very surprised if there is no way to accomplish this. I hope this clarifies what I'm trying to do and maybe it can't be done but it seems simple enough to me. On the other hand you can edit the launch bar when you have the app drawer set as your home screen but there does not seem to be a way to add back the shortcuts to the app drawer once you drag them down to the launch bar. The problem with this is that you cannot change the launch bar from this area and icons you add to the home screen only show up when BlinkFeed is your default home screen. Now you can add as many of the same icons as you want back to the home screen but only from the "customize home screen" page. I can create the folder in the launch bar easily by dragging down those shortcuts but once you put them in the launch bar they disappear from the app drawer. What I want to do is create a single folder next to the phone icon in the launch bar containing my app icons for messages, contacts and 2 gmail accounts BUT I also want those same icons to be displayed in my app drawer on the home screen and this is where I am having difficulty. Can one of you veterans help me out here? There must be a simple way to just create a duplicate icon that I am missing. If I change the home screen to BlinkFeed and go to "customize home screen" then I can add as many of the same icons to the screen as I want but when you press down and hold an icon to select it the launch bar disappears from the screen so you can't drag the icon down to create the folder. Now if I try to do this when I have the app tray as my home screen I can drag the icons I want down to the launch bar and create the folder but then it takes them away from the app tray and I cant figure out how to create a duplicate icon to place on the screen. Anyway what I want to do is create a folder in the launch bar consisting of the messages icon as well as contacts, gmail and stock email BUT I also want those icons displayed on the screen as well. I've had a BlackBerry since '07 and 2 weeks ago finally decided to use my upgrade and get the HTC One. You can easily browse your repository bookmarks and open them directly from LaunchBar. LaunchBar comes with direct integration for our Tower Git client. Now, I've configured CMD+ALT+\ to show my last 10 clipboard entries with LaunchBar: Tower Repository Bookmarks ' Other popular downloads in System Tools. I've "lost" countless valuable clipboard contents by pressing CMD+C just a bit too quickly. (Or use SHIFT+CMD+arrow right to sort by date added.) Clipboard History This will sort the folders contents by modification date. However, with a simple trick, they can even get more useful: when drilling down into the contents of a folder with the right arrow key, keep CMD pressed. LaunchBar's browsing capabilities are great by themselves. I added a custom "jQuery" web indexing rule that allows me to search the jQuery API documentation right from within LaunchBar: Browse - and Sort by Date Search Documentationīy creating a new indexing rule, you can extend LaunchBar's searching powers - e.g. for changing a file's permissions or opening it in Vim. LaunchBar allows you to open a Terminal session in the current path - simply by pressing CMD + T.Įven better yet: you can directly perform a command on a selected file by pressing CMD+SHIFT+T. Open in TerminalĪs developers, we often need to perform commands in the Terminal. You can then simply type a few characters from a Snippet's name - and LaunchBar automatically fills the text into the currently active textfield. If you just want to install the Actions, and not worry about how they were created, you can get them at this link.No matter if it's for an email or when coding: if you find yourself writing something again and again, you should create a "Snippet". Here’s what the LaunchBar action looks like in use: I still created a duplicate with a different name, so I could have one action named Light Mode, and another named Dark Mode. As a result, you really only need one LaunchBar action. When you do this, your Mac will switch from your current mode – dark or light – to the opposite. In my case, I named my actions “Dark Mode” and “Light Mode,” so I switch to dark mode by typing “DM” and light mode by typing “LM.” Once created, you invoke the Action the same way you invoke other LaunchBar actions – by calling up LaunchBar with your keyboard shortcut and typing part of the Action’s name. Start with a single keyboard shortcut to access and control every corner of your Mac. It just occasionally invites you to take a short break, allowing you to breathe and relax. Otherwise just follow the instructions, and remember the name you gave your Action. Use LaunchBar for free In addition to a 30-day trial period LaunchBar can be used for free as long and as often as you like. Start with the part of the instructions that reads, “First, invoke the Action Editor in LB.” When you get to the part of the instructions containing an AppleScript, 1 use the AppleScript I’ve included above, instead of the AppleScript in the instructions. That’s fantastic (and something you should tuck away for future use), but you want to focus on the part of the instructions that explain how to set up an AppleScript in the LaunchBar Action Editor. His instructions will guide you through how to run a Keyboard Maestro macro via LaunchBar. The best instructions I’ve seen for setting up a script in the LaunchBar Action Editor are by Brian Kammer over in the Keyboard Maestro forums, of all places. To do so, you need to open LaunchBar’s Action Editor to create your action. I haven’t tried this method, because I’ve inserted the script directly into a LaunchBar action. You could probably save the AppleScript as an application, and run that application using LaunchBar. Introducing Launchbar, a dynamic and intuitive Windows 7 software designed by Mertsch. You now need a way to invoke that AppleScript. I prefer using LaunchBar to call the script, as opposed to a menu bar app, because I’m more efficient if I keep my hands on the keyboard. LaunchBar is an award winning productivity utility. I’ve set forth the steps for creating this below, but you can jump to the end of this post if you only want to download the Actions and don’t care how they’re made.Įnd tell setting up the applescript on launchbar To do so, you need a program that can invoke an AppleScript, such as LaunchBar. But I f your menu bar is already too cluttered, or if you prefer keeping your hands on the keyboard, you can set up your own tool to accomplish this instead. NightOwl is a menu bar app to help you quickly toggle Mojave’s dark mode on and off. And – that voice! Often oscillating between a silky coo and a guttural howl, Wilde possesses a rare instinctive gift with maneuvering her powerful – yet controlled - vocal mechanism to paint and elicit an emotional atmosphere or response.Īt heart, Wilde’s musical gems take form as emotionally-receptive storytelling – evocative, solemn and dreamy. Pulling influences from everything encountered or experienced, she does not set out to copy or tweak any one sound, yet seeks to create truly original works that build and amplify the mood while spinning poetic tales, both otherworldly and familiar. Over the near-decade since its inception, Wilde has been writing, performing and continuing to lay the sonic and visionary foundations of the project and experimenting with a variety of soundscapes (including electronica and folk rock). Musically, Minor Birds weaves together striking mezzo-soprano vocals, ominous baroque-era classical piano, modern guitar work, stand-up bass, cello and various other instrumentation to deliver dramatic indie pop rock with notable elements of goth, doom-folk and grunge. Channeling deep-sea emotional depths, the project finds Wilde exploring life’s mysticism and darkness mixed with a healthy infusion of timeless tales of love - or lack thereof. Rising from the dust of a creative dry spell brought on by a series of tragic events in her life in 2008, the band, moniker and concept of Minor Birds was hatched. This is just one of many conveyed of the difficult-to-pigeonhole Minor Birds’ (aka singer-songwriter/pianist Chelsea Wilde) sound.Ī classically trained pianist and self-taught multi-instrumentalist (including guitar, accordion, and banjo), Wilde has been composing and performing music in different capacities since childhood. When a band’s style is difficult to classify, its interpretations and descriptors can vastly vary. Intense, soaring vocals and classical-inspired piano amalgamate to concoct dramatic indie rock with a misting of moody goth/doom folk. The program also permits work to be exported to a variety of file formats: EPS, PDF, PSD, SVG, as well as JPG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF. It has a full suite of vector drawing tools, such as pen tools, vector brushes, and the ability to create new brushes, and smart symbols. But what do users think of the software? Let’s see what people are saying about Affinity Designer.ĭesigner has a lot of other features familiar to Illustrator users, such as layers and gradient fills. (Users will need to purchase a new license for new releases as the software updates, of course.) Those with older systems will be relieved the software works on MacOS going back 10.9 (Mavericks) and iOS 12 and above, and Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 (Service Pack 1 Aero enabled).Īt $49.99/application, the price is right on the Affinity software suite, and the awards recognition is promising. Better yet, the purchase is one-time-only Affinity does not lock users into a subscription model. Affinity Publisher is too new to have garnered such recognition, but has gotten high marks in trade publication reviews.Įach application is available for purchase for $49.99, but tentative new users can download a 10-day free trial for each application. Affinity Photo was named Best Mac App of 2015. Affinity Designer earned Apple’s Best of 2014 in both the Mac App Store and iTunes Store, and the 2015 Apple Design Award. The entire suite of Affinity programs has been well received by reviewers. Editing options are limited if the document is opened in other than the native program. However, for quick fixes, for example, edits to typos, that capability is welcome. One of the most exciting features about the three programs is that documents created in one can be opened in the other two. Designer and Photo were also developed for Mac iOS and work on iPads an iOS version of Publisher is due to be released sometime in 2020. Microsoft versions of all three applications have also been released. During that time Serif ceased development on their legacy products (although licenses and a support forum are still available on their website). In June of 2019, the third program in Affinity’s suite, Affinity Publisher, launched. Affinity Designer launched in 2014, followed in 2015 by Affinity Plus. The company scrapped the old code and invested five years into developing a new vector graphics application specifically for the MacOS. But, by Serif’s own admission, the software became bloated and outdated, and was locked into the Window’s operating system. Their applications, PagePlus, PhotoPlus, MoviePlus, and WebPlus, had about a 20-year run. Serif got its start in the mid 1980s developing low-cost desktop publishing software for the Microsoft Windows environment. Today and over the next two months, we’ll be looking at a paid alternative to Creative Suite, and one that’s been getting a lot of attention: Affinity, and its suite of programs, Designer, Photo, and Publisher.Īffinity is owned by Serif (Europe), Ltd, a privately owned company located in the United Kingdom. While the price was right on those options, each had serious concerns reported by professional users. Last month we covered a number of free options to Adobe’s powerful suit of creative software most commonly used by graphic artists: Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
